Black and Sexy
Have you eaten a Kumato yet?
It’s a new breed of tomato, the color of which is so deep as to be almost black, that has its origins in the Galapagos Islands. Apparently its other quality – apart from an intense flavor – is that it’s a natural aphrodisiac for giant tortoises.
I promise you, I’m not making this up.
They’ve just gone on sale here in Oz, following a debut in the UK, and I can confirm that they are delicious. I had one for lunch, sliced on toasted pana de casa with olive oil, wine vinegar, sea salt, black pepper and basil leaves.
I can’t say that I’m feeling particularly frisky as a result, but then I’m not a giant tortoise. More of a dinosaur, really.
I'm told that for the time being at least komatoes will have quite a short season, so if you can get hold of some my advice would be to eat the fruit and try growing the seeds yourself. If you have forgotten what a real tomato should taste like, you are in for a treat.
